When you’ve been making wine in Australia since the 1800s, you tend to know a thing or two about shiraz. Hardys built their name on bold thinking and even bolder drinking reds, and this bottle is a cracking reminder of why they’re still a household name all these years later. Oh, and the price will genuinely knock your socks off!

Why do we love this wine?

It’s shiraz through and through, that's undeniable. Completely opaque in the glass, it opens with a rush of mulberry, blueberry and ripe plum, with a dusting of spice and a little milk-chocolate richness swirling around behind it. There’s a hint of white pepper for good measure, just to keep things lively. The palate follows the same script but really takes things up a gear. Tannins are silky but present, giving it proper structure without turning it into a chew-fest. A touch of French oak rounds things out and stretches the finish nicely. But that's not the best bit... For a wine with this kind of pedigree and punch, the price is borderline ridiculous. It tastes exactly like good shiraz should - generous fruit, savoury detail, tidy structure - and it’ll happily cellar for five to ten years if you’ve got the patience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The HRB Shiraz 2020 delivers premium shiraz characteristics - generous fruit, savoury complexity, and proper tannin structure - at a price point that's remarkably accessible. Its gold medal wins at both Hobart and Melbourne Wine Shows confirm this isn't just marketing hype. Hardy's has managed to craft a wine that punches well above its weight class, offering the kind of quality you'd typically expect to pay significantly more for.

This shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 5-10 years thanks to its silky but present tannin structure and French oak integration. As it ages, the vibrant mulberry and plum fruit will evolve into more complex secondary flavours, while the spice notes will become more integrated. The milk-chocolate richness will likely develop into deeper, earthier tones, creating a more sophisticated drinking experience over time.

The wine's rich fruit profile and silky tannins make it perfect for red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked casseroles. The white pepper notes and spice elements complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the milk-chocolate undertones pair wonderfully with aged cheeses. Its full-bodied nature can also stand up to hearty pasta dishes with rich tomato-based sauces.

The French oak in this shiraz provides subtle structural support rather than dominating the fruit character. It rounds out the wine's texture and extends the finish, adding complexity without overwhelming the generous mulberry and plum flavours. French oak typically imparts more refined, spicy notes compared to American oak, which complements the wine's existing white pepper and spice elements perfectly.

This HRB Shiraz exemplifies what Australian shiraz does best - delivering bold, ripe fruit flavours with excellent balance and drinkability. The combination of dark berry fruits, spice, and full-bodied richness represents the Australian approach to this varietal, which tends to be more fruit-forward and approachable than its French Syrah counterparts. The wine's opaque colour and generous palate are hallmarks of quality Australian shiraz from warm climate regions.
